The Australian hairdressing industry sends 1,500 tons of recyclable aluminium back to landfill each year.
That’s one and a half million kilos, about 715 cars, or 4 jumbo jets! Unfortunately, aluminium doesn’t degrade easily; it actually contaminates the soil for 500 years. Add to this the waste of plastics, colour tubes, cut hair and more, and you soon see that beauty at any price is no longer an option.
Ssh hair is a Sustainable Salon, now recycles 95% of its waste by using the comprehensive resource recovery service. Ssh hair loves that the proceeds from recycling benefit the community through several programs. Every kilo of recycled aluminium helps Oz Harvest fund four meals for the homeless.
Ponytails go to the Variety Charity to provide wigs to children with alopecia,
While cut hair is made into booms used to absorb oil spills.
As clients become more aware of the impact products have on the environment, they have also welcomed the opportunity to make a difference.
We are a social enterprise that rescues up to 95% of salon resources from landfill and finds repurposing solutions that benefit our planet, all while supporting the community. We make the set-up simple by providing a completely customised bin installation for the salon.
We provide a convenient and regular door-to-door pickup service to the salon every fortnight. All proceeds from repurposing salon materials are donated to OzHarvest and KiwiHarvest to distribute meals for those in need. We provide more than 2,000 meals every month!
We’re creating stronger futures for people with a disability by providing purposeful work within our material collection and processing streams.
Our network of salon professionals volunteers their time and skills at community events for those who don’t have the means to access basic services for themselves.
